Last Saturday, July 9, Òmnium Cultural Maresme presented the Òmnium Mataró 2022 Distinction to the teacher and singer-songwriter, member of Mataró Cultural, Genís Mayola Serrat.
Mayola received the Distinction in recognition of her commitment to the Catalan language and culture and the defense of civil and political rights. The board of Òmnium Maresme has especially highlighted his career as a teacher and singer-songwriter and his commitment to building peace through culture by promoting and directing for more than two decades the Spring Choir for Peace, his activism cultural and political claiming the right to self-determination and denouncing political repression and engaging in many of the social demands that have marked the pulse of the city. The organization also highlights his role as a teacher at the GEM school, transmitting his love of music to his students for more than 30 years.
The award ceremony for the Òmnium Mataró Distinction took place on Saturday 9 July in the Pati de Can Marchal, as part of the organisation’s annual party. The event aims to be a meeting place with members and all the residents of Mataró and the region and had games and children’s activities from 6 pm.
Genis Mayola received the Distinction from the President ofOmnium Maresme, Laia Nonell, but before that, the former director of the GEM school, Ramon Salicrú, glossed over the winner. Xavier Rodon, Mayola's successor in the direction of Spring for Peace, also sent a letter, which was read by Nonell.
Attendees were then able to enjoy a concert by the group Paunezz, which was offered at the reverse box office.
Genís Mayola has been a member of Mataró Cultural since its inception. He edits and presents the program "Music without an expiration date", which is broadcast weekly by Mataró Ràdio and which aims to bring classical music closer to everyone.
